Description

In Modern Hebrew and in contemporary Israeli culture, we can never fully separate קודש from חול - sacred from everyday, religious from secular. The Hebrew language is based on Biblical and religious Hebrew roots, and Israeli culture and language has many layers of religious references. In this course we will explore central concepts and stories in Hebrew, mostly from the Tanakh (the Hebrew Bible). We will learn about: ~ ‎The place of the Tanakh in Israeli culture and society ~ Connections between current political issues and historical Jewish texts ~ Connections between Jewish mythology and other Near Eastern mythologies We will read Tanakh both in the original Biblical Hebrew and in the controversial and fascinating "translation" into Modern Hebrew. As we explore the texts, we will discuss how the themes that come up are relevant to our lives and to Israeli society today. Themes include: gender, family, monotheism, Jerusalem, love, ethics, and more. Of course, this course is open to all Intermediate Level Hebrew students whatever your religious background - whether you're a long time Yeshiva student or completely secular, whether you're Jewish or not. This course is for learners who are beyond the basic conversational level and can communicate in Hebrew in the present and past tense and form their own sentences. You will get more creative and confident with the language and be able to communicate with more complexity. *** Early Bird Price - 1200 NIS - Until 16/06 Regular Price - 1300 NIS - Until 07/07 Late Price - 1400 NIS - Until first lesson of the course We have made a small change in our pricing structure and are now offering a sliding scale in order to give you the opportunity to donate 100 or 200 shekels when you buy a course. This money will go toward the TINAU scholarship fund and emergency support for TINAU.
