Explore the complex histories, debates, and contemporary trajectories of Arab feminism in this advanced Arabic course, Arab Feminism. The course offers an interdisciplinary engagement with feminist thought, activism, cultural production, and struggles for social justice across the Arab world (but sometimes, not only), while further developing students’ advanced Arabic language skills. Through literary texts, political writings, media, film, manifestos, and intellectual debates, students will examine how feminist movements in the region have emerged in relation to colonialism, nationalism, state formation, religion, capitalism, and social transformation. The course highlights the diverse voices and experiences that have shaped feminist thought and practice across different Arab contexts, moving beyond simplified or monolithic understandings of “Arab feminism.” At the same time, the course situates Arab feminist traditions within broader global feminist conversations. Students will engage in comparative discussions with Black feminisms, postcolonial feminisms, intersectional feminisms, Latin American feminisms, and other Global South feminist frameworks in order to explore both convergences and tensions across feminist movements worldwide. The course strengthens students’ abilities to critically engage with complex texts and discussions while expanding their vocabulary and fluency in academic and cultural contexts. By the end of the course, students will not only have advanced their Arabic proficiency, but also developed a deeper critical understanding of feminism as a global, historically situated, and politically contested field of thought and practice. *** Early Bird Price Start at - 1300 NIS - Until 14/06 Reduced Price Start at - 1400 NIS - Until 05/07 Full Price Start at - 1500 NIS - Until first lesson of the course We have made a small change in our pricing structure and are now offering a sliding scale in order to give you the opportunity to donate 100 or 200 shekels when you buy a course. Tel-Aviv is the Israel most people know and yet it is far from being the face of Israel. Most Israelis, including some Tel-Avivians, have a love/hate relationship with it. They call it “the state of Tel-Aviv”, implying it’s not actually part of Israel, and in some way it’s true - and yet it is the most Israeli creation you can imagine, have you noticed we didn’t write about Jaffa? In this course we will learn together how this city was born, from an off-shoot neighborhood of Jaffa to the metropolis it is today. How did all of this happen? It is the story of those who dreamt about the first “Hebrew city”, what actually happened and who profited from it all? Like the city itself it’s an amazing story - happy and uplifting and at the same time has all the tragedies of Israel/Palestine, though it looks different, because you know… Tel-Aviv has to be special. What stories about people can food tell? How do different communities in Israel use food to celebrate, to remember, to resist, or simply to feel at home? And what can we learn about this place by looking at what - and how - we eat? In this course, we will explore Israel’s diverse communities through their culinary traditions. We will look at food as a doorway into culture: from family dishes and holiday meals to street food, markets, and contemporary food trends. Along the way, we will get to know the histories, values, and everyday lives of groups living in this land - Mizrahi, Ashkenazi, Palestinian, Ethiopian, Russian-speaking communities, as well as refugees and migrant workers. Together, we will watch short videos, read menus and personal stories, discuss recipes, and learn the vocabulary of food and identity. Through these tastes and tales, we will examine how food reflects belonging and exclusion, memory and migration, tradition and change. This course is designed for Hebrew learners who are beyond the basics and communicate in all tenses. Here you will gain confidence, expand your vocabulary, and develop the ability to discuss complex social topics in Hebrew - making your voice a part of the conversation. Why do we vote? How do we vote? The universal right to elect and be elected is a defining feature of modern polities and a cornerstone of citizenship. We are taught, formally and informally, that voting is both a civic duty and a democratic right, indeed, a privilege. So, when that right is restricted or denied, we tend to see it as a serious democratic failure. And yet our understanding of why people vote, how they vote, and why some do not vote remains incomplete. This course approaches these questions through voting patterns in Israel, with particular attention to the upcoming elections, which, once again, framed as critical to Israel’s future.
