About the Event
Walking Tour of Wadi Salib with Dotan Brom
Wadi Salib is a wound that refuses to heal. On this tour, we will walk among abandoned houses and those undergoing renovation, encountering poignant and stirring stories of war, displacement, and struggle. Since its establishment in the late 19th century, this neighborhood in Haifa has seen much. We will hear about its Muslim past, as well as the Ottoman Jews who lived there. We will discuss the 1948 war and the fate of Haifa's Palestinians, explore the 1959 Wadi Salib riots - the first Mizrahi protest in Israel, which influenced all subsequent social protests. We will discuss the neighborhood's depopulation in the 1960s and raise questions about the various attempts at urban renewal that began in the 1980s.
Dotan Brom is a certified tour guide and historian who researches the history of Haifa, and is a TINAU Arabic student!
