About the Event

Join First Hand Films, TINAU, and Hashomer Hatzair Australia for a screening of Pickles at the Beit Anielewicz on  January 3rd! This is our second collaborative screening with First Hand Films, an award-winning international sales company, producer, and distributor based in Zurich, Switzerland.

Pickles is the story of how eight Palestinian-Arab widows, lacking formal education and vocational training, one day decided to jointly open a plant for the production of high quality pickles. This is a story of a cooperative (just like us!) destiny, grit and resourcefulness, collaboration, and learning together to defy societal odds and inequality to produce excellent pickles. Will they succeed? Will they profit? Join us to find out!

“An unconventional business start-up offering rare insight into the lives of courageous women striving to overcome extraordinary obstacles to achieve a better life. Eight Arab-Israeli widows are leading a cloistered and restricted life, struggling to raise their children on a monthly social security allowance from the state. Then they decide to challenge convention by starting up a business venture. They establish a tiny factory for pickling vegetables and develop a market for their product in local stores. With little formal education or work experience outside the home, the women face numerous hurdles as the business struggles to expand to stores throughout Israel - while their personal lives reflect the joys and sadness of family weddings, bereavement, and loneliness.”

This event is donations based- meaning bring what you can! Our suggested donation is $15-$20.
