Description

What's going on in Israel-Palestine? Lower Intermediate Hebrew course - NIF NewGen with This Is Not An Ulpan Interested in learning about Israeli and Palestinian society from a critical perspective? Want to discuss issues like the occupation, the current anti-government protests, the LGBT community in Israel, and more? Do you want to do all this with your NIF NewGen community, getting to connect to like-minded people across North America? We've got you covered! In this tailored course you will explore social, cultural and political issues in Israel-Palestine whilst improving your Hebrew. There will be flexibility on the topics based on your interests. Grammar and vocabulary will be taught in an integrated way. We will also look at NIF grantees, to understand the context and impact of their work. What is "pre intermediate"? This course bridges between structured Beginner Hebrew to the less-filtered world of Intermediate, giving you tools to express ideas and opinions in Hebrew. With discussions, watching video clips, and reading short texts from social media and the news, we will explore complex topics in a way that is still accessible for advanced Beginners/nearly intermediate learners. Because the course is content-based, it will still be relevant and interesting for Intermediate learners, and we expect there to be a range of levels. Previous knowledge: Ability to read and write in Hebrew, with and without vowels Can communicate in a variety of situations in daily life, make basic sentences Use of grammatical structures including: conjugating present tense, past tense and infinitive verbs; questions and answers, possession and other prepositions Learning outcomes: Express opinions and understand some conversations and texts about Israeli social issues and cultural topics Improve proficiency reading and writing without vowels Ability to create longer and more complex sentences, to go “off script”, to communicate on a wider variety of topics Understanding and using more complex grammar, such as future tense and smikhut (construct nouns) Starting October 15, the class will meet every Sunday from 11:30-1:30 (Est)/ 4:30-6:30pm (UK) for 10 weeks. Space is limited, so apply ASAP to reserve a spot! The New Israel Fund is generously subsidizing half of the cost per NewGen participant. The resulting course price is 450 shekels. By signing up for the course, you agree to receive emails about national and local NIF NewGen events.
