JLM - It’s Complicated January 18 - March 22 | 30h

  • Starts Jan 18, 2022
  • 1,200 Israeli new shekels
  • JLM, TBD

“Yerushalayim shel ma’la” (ירושלים יש מעלה, Jerusalem above) has been a symbol, an object of longing, a projection of spiritual fantasies. Meanwhile, the residents of “Yerushalayim shel mata” (ירושלים של מטה - Jerusalem below) live our real, messy, multi-lingual, stereotype-defying lives. Sometimes touched by the spiritual, sometimes as mundane and secular as can be. This course is a tour of “Yerushalayim shel mata”, daily life in the city as it is today - in the classroom and outside of it. We’ll walk through the history, politics, culture, geography and people of North, South, East and West Jerusalem/ alQuds. We’ll explore off the beaten track, we won’t avoid the tough questions. Whether you’re a long-time resident, a recent arrival, or a temporary visitor, bring your curiosity to this course. This course is for learners who are beyond the basic conversational level and can communicate in Hebrew in the present and past tense and form their own sentences. In this course, you will get more creative and confident with the language and be able to communicate with more complexity about a range of topics in society and your daily life. Grammar and other linguistic elements will be taught in an integrated way depending on the needs and interests of the students. We will combine trips with classroom learning and student-led presentations.
