Service Description

Education is a political act. In the modern age, the broadening of education to the whole population was part of nation-building and creating capitalist society. How and where do these processes take place? Who do they influence and how do they shape the social relations in the context of Israel-Palestine and in general? Who are the partners in shaping the educational process, and who is not included? In this course we will examine the role of education in Israel-Palestine since the start of modern education and until today. We will learn about historical processes but we will also explore our own experiences of education - what is the meaning of education for you, and how did that shape your social, political and civic worldview. The topics which the course will deal with: The establishment of the modern school in Ottoman Palestine The education system under the British Mandate: who was given educational independence? The Zionist movement and the segregation of education From the “war of the languages” to the Nation-State Basic Law - what is the language of education? What is the place of the school in education? Through discussions, writing tasks and reading/ viewing different media, we will deepen and broaden our ability to communicate about complex and relevant topics at an advanced level of Hebrew.
